The Hell Is My Heaven

Lena Katina in OK! Magazine (Russia)

“MY APPEARANCE IS MY ADVANTAGE

Sometime in the forming of t.A.T.u. Lena Katina conquered Great Britain. Who does not remember the short plaid skirts, which practically became iconic amongst adolescent girls? Today, Lena is working in Los Angeles on a solo project and is recording new songs- recording just in English.

ABOUT A DRESS WITH A FLOWER PRINT
An artist can dictate his style to the public. If you are successful, then people begin copying you. What’s worn is what sells. And not the other way around. Remember how many girls began wearing school uniforms during the time of t.A.T.u.? Before it was just a uniform. You can say that we dictated the style. But more importantly, in my view, you need to wear not what is in style, but what suits you. I, for instance, love dresses that have a small flower print…but not on me. I put it on and look like a milkmaid from Ryazan. Girls, you need to look at yourselves in the mirror! If it’s in style does not mean it’s good. Just like if something is sexual does not mean it is frank. When clothes do not leave a man anything to the imagination, he begins to get bored.

ABOUT VIVIAN WESTWOOD
When I hear the words “English Style” I imagine only one image- elegant classic: a man in a dress-coat, a woman in an elegant dress. I imagine typical English people being ostentatious and strict in a good sense of the word. To dress in a way that makes them stand out is considered dumb in England. Although, my dear Vivian Westwood, is in the same style as we did for this shoot. She broke the conservative foundation and became extremely popular! She knows how to draw attention to herself. However, when you see her clothes you understand that even if it’s torn it is expensive. Not in a sense of “rich’, because everything that Vivian Westwood does is in her own style. She, needless to say, is one-of-a-kind. A white crow.

IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE YOURSELF
I was also a white crow in my childhood. A redhead with freckles. Of course I was teased, but these jokes upset me up to the point where I said to myself that my different look was an advantage. “You are all just jealous”, I answered to those who tried bothering me. Overcoming this was not easy. It required a lot of work to be done on myself. Although when mine and Yulia’s fans admitted that they wanted to look like us, I talked them out of it. You should not try to look like someone else, you have to love yourself the way you are…Soon summer is coming, there are only a little bit of freckles right now- I am worried about this.

ABOUT THE GRAMMYS
When I say “Lena Katina” not everyone understands that I am me. When I say “Lena Katina from t.A.T.u.” then people recognize me immediately. Right now I am busy with  my solo project and want to finally lessen the influence of this attachment (to t.A.T.u.). Not because I refuse to be associated with my past, but because I want people to know more about my own music. I did not make a goal for myself to repeat the insane success of t.A.T.u. That is silly. I made a goal for myself to achieve new success, success of Lena Katina and to receive a Grammy, of course! Sometimes I even imagine what I will wear to the ceremony, what I will say on stage…
